Hellenic Initiative Against Alzheimer’s Disease

The Hellenic Initiative Against Alzheimer’s Disease (HIAAD) was established by a group of Greek researchers from the Johns Hopkins University (USA) and scientists from the Bioinformatics and Human Electrophysiology Laboratory (BiHELab) of the Ionian University. It comprises scientists from various disciplines, from all over the world, who combine their scientific knowledge and research skills to face together, interdisciplinary, the evolution of the pandemic of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders in Greece.

The vision of HIAAD is to help Greece properly prepare for the imminent significant increase in the incidence of Alzheimer’s or related disorders, which is expected to reach pandemic proportions due to the aging of the population, through a series of activities that improve care programs, support families and caregivers, promote prevention, educate the public, and empower the scientific community to find a cure.

HIAAD has been working on the following:

  • Care To significantly increase the number of clinical programs for people living with dementia and to improve the quality of the services provided.
  • Support To significantly strengthen the assistance offered to patients’ families.
  • Prevention To disseminate practical advice for the prevention of dementia and related disorders.
  • Update To inform the public about dementia and the effectiveness of existing care to eliminate stigma.
  • Science To significantly expand the circle of Greek researchers who contribute to finding a cure.

In the framework of this effort, it is extremely honorary for us both personally and professionally to participate in this major initiative, as members of the Executive Committee.

The initiative is under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic and enjoys the support of the Ministries of Health, Education and Religious Affairs, Tourism, Development and Investments.
